The Champions League final between Manchester United and Chelsea went into extra time in Moscow after Cristiano Ronaldo's first-half header was cancelled out by Frank Lampard's reply on the stroke of half-time.

Lampard pulled Chelsea level in a thrilling final, showing a cool head after Michael Essien's effort had taken two deflections.

United had made the breakthrough thanks to Ronaldo's 42nd goal of the season, the Portugal winger heading in at the back post in the 26th minute.

Chelsea almost took the lead in the 78th minute when a marvellous 25-yard curler from Didier Drogba beat Edwin Van der Sar only to come back off the post.

United responded and Carlos Tevez saw his effort go narrowly wide three minutes later following a clever cutback by Patrice Evra.

Then, in the 84th minute, Florent Malouda found Drogba with a free-kick but the angle was too tight and his effort failed to trouble Van der Sar.

Sir Alex Ferguson made his first change in the 87th minute bringing on Ryan Giggs for Paul Scholes.

In the process, Giggs made his 759th appearance for the club to overtake Sir Bobby Charlton's record as the final went into extra-time.
