Optimising Windows
This is a dangerous section. Here I will tell you how to make windows a little bit faster. If you have any doubts, do not do this. Some of these steps mean changes in the system registration. It could result in windows crashing and not being able to start again. Just because it worked for me and many others, doesn't guarantee it is going to work for you.
Remove the background
One of the things that slows down Windows from loading is the background picture. Depending on size and resolution it really can make a big difference. The picture also takes up valuable RAM Resources, resources that unnecessarily slow down all other applications. To remove the background picture, right click a free part of the desktop screen, click on Properties. In the following window, click on None.
Remove start up ballast
Click on START then on Run and type in msconfig and press ENTER. Click on Start Up and remove checks from all programs that you do not want to start at start up. Careful: Do not uncheck any instances of LoadPowerProfile, ScanRegistry, TaskMonitor and SystemTray. These are essential Windows programs that need to be running all the time.
Disable search for removable drives
During every start up, Windows searches for new removable drives. Since one doesn't install new removable drives everyday (If you are one of those who does - just skip this one! Cheers!) this search can be safely disabled. Right click My Computer click on Properties, click on FileSytem, then on the tab Floppy Disc and uncheck the option Search for new drives.....
Starting without Splash
If you want to get rid of the flying Windows splash screen at start up, then double click My Computer, then on C:\ (or the name for your hard drive), scroll down till you see the file msdos.sys and right click it and select Properties. Uncheck the Read only under attributes. Click OK. Then right click again and select Open with and then Notepad . Use the cursor to move down the page till you see the entries
[Options]
BootMulti=1
BootGUI=1
DoubleBuffer=1
Logo=0 <<(Insert this here)
Save file, re-enable Read only. At the next start, the splash screen will no longer appear. And if at any stage you start missing it - then just delete the line to get the start screen back.
Users with a good knowledge of Windows ways and workings, may want to download the TweakUI program from Microsoft. Please note that this interface makes it very easy to make the wrong changes to your system - if you do not know what you are doing. Microsoft does not offer support for changes made with this tool and does not recommend the usage of this tool.
